Tyler Mitchell, 23, has made history by becoming the first black photographer to shoot a cover for American Vogue.

At the behest of cover star Beyoncé, the young artist was hired to photograph her for the fashion publication’s esteemed September issue, traditionally its biggest and most anticipated volume of the year. After gaining attention for his work with his 2015 photo book, El Paquete, featuring images of Cuban teens skating and local architecture, the New York University’s Tisch School of Arts graduate quickly went on to shoot for Marc Jacobs, Dazed, i-D and Givenchy, and now counts Naomi Campbell, SZA, Edward Enninful and Solange Knowles among his 82,000 Instagram followers. The Atlanta native has also shot vibrant portraits of young black men, currently on view at his exhibition The Way We Live Now at the New York’s Aperture Foundation, in order to 'depict Black people and people of colour in a really real and pure way' as a response to his struggles in accepting his African American identity.
